Character.AI is a free app for chatting and roleplaying with AI characters that users create, from original personas to fictional archetypes. As of September 2026 it has become a wider entertainment platform with voice calls, AI video, interactive Stories, Comics and microdramas. It suits adults who want creative roleplay; under-18s can no longer use open-ended chat, and privacy and dependency risks deserve attention.

      What is Character.AI?

Character.AI is made by Character Technologies, Inc., founded in November 2021 by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. The public beta opened in September 2022. Users chat with Characters made by other users or build their own.

In August 2024 Google took a non-exclusive licence to Character.AI’s models and rehired Shazeer, De Freitas and more than two dozen researchers. Google’s payment was later reported at $2.7 billion; Google says it holds no ownership stake. Axios reported that Character.AI would then shift from training its own large models to post-training open models.

Karandeep Anand, formerly president of Brex, became CEO in June 2025. On 18 September 2026 Character.AI announced he is leaving to become Disney’s first chief technology officer (starting 2 October 2026), with some technical staff expected to follow. The announcement named no successor and said the app remains live.

Its chat models are called PipSqueak and DeepSqueak; according to the April 2026 update, PipSqueak 2 improved in-character consistency, memory and writing quality.

      Key features of Character.AI

      Characters and chat

The core product is one-to-one text chat with a Character. Pick one from a searchable library or create your own with a greeting, description and avatar, set a persona, and pin key facts to memory.

      • Free, unlimited messaging for adults (with ads on the free plan)
      • Memory pins: 15 on the free plan, 30 on (c.ai) lite
      • Tools to block other users and report content

      Voice and Character Calls

Character Voice lets you give a Character a voice by recording or uploading a clip, kept private or made public. Character Calls turns a chat into a two-way spoken conversation. According to the help center, voice supports English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and more, and calls need no subscription.

      Lorebook for world-building

Lorebook, announced in April 2026 and launched in beta for c.ai+ subscribers in July 2026, stores world knowledge such as side characters, places, factions and rules. When an entry’s keywords come up in chat, the Character can draw on that lore. Wider access is planned.

      Stories, Scenes and Books

Stories, launched on 25 November 2025, is guided interactive fiction: choose two or three Characters, a genre and a premise, then make choices that branch the plot. It was built for under-18 users but is open to everyone. Scenes (June 2025) drops you into pre-written storylines. Books, added in April 2026, turns public-domain classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Alice in Wonderland into roleplay you can follow or rewrite.

AvatarFX video, Imagine Chat and Comics

AvatarFX, announced in April 2025, animates a still image into a talking video. Character.AI says it blocks photos of minors and prominent politicians, alters other real faces so they are not recognisable, and watermarks the output. Imagine Chat makes images from conversations, and (c.ai) Comics, launched on 2 September 2026, turns a chat or a new premise into a multi-page comic; it is a premium experience paid for with Charms, the app’s virtual currency.

      Feed, Streams and group chat

The Feed, rolled out from 4 August 2025, mixes Chat Snippets, Character Cards, Streams (two Characters debating a topic you set), AvatarFX videos and generated images. Group chat, launched in 2023 as a c.ai+ mobile feature, puts several Characters and people in one room.

      c.ai Series microdramas

In July 2026 Character.AI began releasing studio-made AI microdramas, starting with three shows: Last Summer, The Nighttime Game and Eden Fall. Users over 18 can chat with the cast and roleplay alternate storylines. Creator tools for making series are planned.

      Benefits of Character.AI

      • Free core use: adults can chat without a message cap; paying mainly removes ads and adds better models and memory.
      • Multimodal storytelling: voice calls, video, comics and branching Stories go beyond text.
      • Low barrier for creators: building a Character is simple, and Lorebook adds depth for world-builders.
      • Visible safety investment: age assurance, crisis resources via Koko and ThroughLine, and a Parental Insights tool built with k-ID.

      Character.AI use cases by role

      • Fiction writers and roleplayers: test dialogue, develop characters and explore alternate plots with Lorebook-backed worlds.
      • Language learners: practise casual conversation, including by voice, with a patient partner. In practice, check grammar and facts elsewhere, because Characters improvise.
      • Fans and creators: play Stories, Books and Series, turn chats into Comics, and publish Characters and voices to the Feed.
      • Game masters: prototype non-player characters and test scenarios.

Character.AI is not a research or productivity assistant. Characters are fictional; do not use them for medical, legal or mental-health advice.

      How much does Character.AI cost?

Prices below are as of September 2026, in USD, from Character.AI’s subscription page and help center. Character.AI states that actual prices vary by region because of local currency, taxes and regional pricing tiers.

Character.AI safety, age rules and legal scrutiny

On 29 October 2025 Character.AI announced it would end open-ended chat with Characters for users under 18 no later than 25 November 2025, first capping teen chat at two hours a day and ramping down. It also said it would establish an independent nonprofit, the AI Safety Lab. Under-18 users keep access to Stories, the Feed, AvatarFX, Imagine Chat, character creation and their past conversations.

Age assurance starts with an in-house estimation model. Anyone flagged as under 18 can dispute it with a Persona selfie check, with a government ID requested only if that is inconclusive (see the FAQ below).

The company also faces legal and regulatory scrutiny:

      • Family lawsuits: on 7 January 2026 Character.AI and Google agreed in principle to settle lawsuits in Florida, New York, Colorado and Texas brought by families alleging the chatbot contributed to teens’ self-harm and suicides. Terms were not disclosed.
      • FTC inquiry: on 11 September 2025 the US Federal Trade Commission sent 6(b) orders to Character Technologies and six other companies about how AI companions affect children, handle data and enforce age limits.
      • Texas: on 18 August 2025 Attorney General Ken Paxton opened an investigation into Character.AI and Meta AI Studio over chatbots allegedly presented as mental-health tools, adding to an existing SCOPE Act probe.
      • Kentucky: on 12 January 2026 Attorney General Russell Coleman sued under the state’s new Consumer Data Protection Act, seeking civil penalties and a court order. Character.AI said user safety is its highest priority.
      • Pennsylvania: on 5 May 2026 the state announced a lawsuit by its Department of State, alleging a Character claimed to be a licensed psychiatrist and gave an invalid licence number.
      • Disney: after a September 2025 cease-and-desist letter, Character.AI removed Disney-owned characters such as Mickey Mouse.

On privacy, the help center explains how to switch off an “Improve the Model for Everyone” setting so new chats are not used to train its generative models, and a July 2026 privacy update says users can opt out of AI training at any time. In practice, treat chats as not private.

      Frequently asked questions

      Is Character.AI free?

Yes. Character.AI’s help center says messaging is free and unlimited. The free plan shows ads and has 15 memory pins. Paid plans remove friction rather than unlock chat: (c.ai) lite starts at $4.99 a month for fewer ads and better memory, and c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month for no ads, unlimited premium chat styles and early features.

      How much does c.ai+ cost?

As of September 2026, c.ai+ is $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year in USD, according to Character.AI’s subscription page and offer terms. Character.AI says actual prices can vary by region because of local currency, taxes and regional pricing tiers, and it runs occasional promotions. App Store and Google Play subscriptions are billed and managed there.

      Can under-18s use Character.AI?

Yes, but not for open-ended chat. Since 25 November 2025, users identified as under 18 cannot hold free-form conversations with Characters. They can still read past conversations, create Characters, browse the Feed, and use Stories, AvatarFX and Imagine Chat. The minimum age in Character.AI’s terms is 13, or 16 in the EU, according to Internet Matters.

      How does Character.AI verify age?

Character.AI first estimates age with an in-house model using login information, platform activity and some third-party signals. If you are flagged as under 18 and disagree, you can take a Persona selfie check. A government ID is requested only if the selfie is inconclusive; Character.AI says it does not store IDs and Persona keeps them for up to one week.

Does Character.AI use my chats to train its AI?

It can, unless you opt out. Character.AI’s help center explains how to deselect an “Improve the Model for Everyone” setting, and its July 2026 privacy update says users can opt out of AI training at any time. Opting out stops new content being used for training, though some data is still used for search, recommendations and safety. Avoid sharing personal, health or financial details.

      Is Character.AI owned by Google?

No. In August 2024 Google signed a non-exclusive licence to Character.AI’s technology and hired co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas plus a group of researchers, a deal reported at about $2.7 billion. Google has said it has no ownership stake. Character Technologies remains an independent company, and in January 2026 both firms agreed in principle to settle several family lawsuits.

Verdict: is Character.AI worth it in 2026?

For adults who enjoy interactive fiction, Character.AI remains one of the most complete character-chat platforms: unlimited free chat, a vast Character library, voice calls and a growing set of formats such as Stories, Books, Comics and Series. The $4.99 (c.ai) lite tier and $9.99 c.ai+ are fair for heavy users who want no ads and better memory.

The caveats are documented: teens are limited to structured formats, the company faces lawsuits and state actions, chats may train its models, and a CEO transition is under way. Use it as entertainment, keep personal details out of chats, and step back if it starts replacing real-world connection.
