Which AI models power ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in 2026?

ChatGPT: GPT-5.6 in chat, GPT-6 mainly in Work and Codex

According to OpenAI’s help center, Free and Go users chat with GPT-5.6 Luna, while Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use GPT-5.6 Sol. The new flagship, GPT-6 Astra, launched on 3 September 2026. In chat it powers GPT-6 Pro on the Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, while Plus gets Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI says it improves coding, research, computer use and multi-step work.

On 22 September OpenAI added two smaller models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, to Work and Codex for paid plans. OpenAI says they are “not yet available in Chat.”

Claude: Opus 5.5 for most work, Fable 5.1 for the hardest tasks

Anthropic’s model documentation lists four current models. Claude Opus 5.5 is the recommended starting point for most work. Anthropic says it “performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5,” and generates output more than 30% faster than its predecessor. Claude Fable 5.1 is positioned for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work. Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are faster, cheaper options. Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5 all have a 1M-token context window.

Gemini: fast Flash releases, a Pro model waiting for an update

Google describes Gemini 3.8 Flash as “our most intelligent workhorse model,” with gains in software engineering, agentic tasks and multi-step reasoning. In the app it requires AI Pro or Ultra. The top Pro model is still Gemini 3.1 Pro from February 2026. TechCrunch reported in July that Gemini 3.5 Pro was in testing with partners; it had not shipped by late September.

Which is best for writing: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

Claude is a strong choice for long-form writing and editing. Anthropic says Opus 5.5’s messages are “much easier to understand at a glance” and put “the most important information up front.” Since 16 September you can ask for a document or a slide deck (Claude Docs and Claude Slides) from any conversation, and the 1M-token context lets you work from whole reports or contracts.

ChatGPT is the stronger choice when writing needs to become a finished file. OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra is “our best model for adhering to existing templates,” and ChatGPT Work can turn a brief into documents, slides, spreadsheets and interactive Sites. Since 17 September 2026, ChatGPT for Word is available on all plans, including Free.

Gemini’s strength is writing inside Google apps. Canvas lets you draft and edit documents, and Gems store custom instructions and files, such as a brand-voice guide. Google’s plans page lists Gemini in Gmail, Vids and other Google apps from the AI Plus plan upward.

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for coding

  • Claude: Claude Code is included in the $20 Pro plan and runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web, mobile, Slack and GitHub Actions. It edits files, runs tests and opens pull requests. Anthropic highlights Opus 5.5 for “codebase-wide migrations and audits.”
  • ChatGPT: Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, lives in the ChatGPT desktop app. Paid plans get GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna inside Codex, and OpenAI claims Astra has “state-of-the-art performance on our internal coding benchmarks.”
  • Gemini: Google says Gemini 3.8 Flash “outperforms most larger frontier models in autonomously solving complex engineering problems.” Google AI Pro includes the Jules coding agent, and 3.8 Flash is also available in Google Antigravity.

Each vendor reports scores on different benchmarks, so their numbers cannot be compared directly. In practice, Claude Code is the most complete repository agent at the $20 price point, ChatGPT Plus with Codex is a close alternative, and Gemini is the low-cost option for prototyping.

Which AI assistant is best for research?

  • ChatGPT deep research can search the public web, uploaded files, connected apps such as Google Drive and SharePoint, and specific websites you choose. Reports download as Markdown, Word or PDF, and every plan includes some usage.
  • Claude Research runs multiple searches that build on each other and returns an answer “in minutes, complete with easy-to-check citations.” It can also use connected Gmail, Calendar and Docs. It is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, not Free.
  • Gemini Deep Research can browse up to hundreds of websites plus your Gmail, Drive and Chat. Reports can be turned into Audio Overviews, quizzes and infographics. Google’s plans page lists it on the free tier.

Image, video and voice: how do they compare?

Image generation

ChatGPT Images 2.5 launched on 8 September 2026 for all tiers. OpenAI says it cuts latency by up to 50% compared with Images 2.0 and adds Sketch, templates and image comments for targeted edits. Gemini uses Nano Banana 2, and paid subscribers can regenerate an image with Nano Banana Pro. Gemini images carry SynthID and visible watermarks. Claude’s models output text only, so Claude cannot generate images natively.

Video generation

Gemini is the only one of the three with built-in video. Google says Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash is replacing Veo 3.1 in the Gemini app. It creates 10-second clips with native audio, animates photos and edits video. It requires a paid Google AI plan. OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on 26 April 2026, and set 24 September 2026 as the end date for the Sora API.

Voice

ChatGPT Voice runs on GPT-Live, a full-duplex model released on 8 July 2026 that “can listen and speak at the same time.” Since 9 September, Plus and Pro use GPT-Live-1 and Go uses GPT-Live-1 mini, and Voice can switch to GPT-5.6 or GPT-6 Astra when it needs to search or reason. Claude’s voice mode is in beta on all plans, across mobile, desktop and web. Gemini Live can share your camera or screen and works with Google apps such as Calendar, Keep and Tasks; Google says it supports more than 45 languages, including Arabic.

Agents and automation compared

  • ChatGPT Work (launched 9 July 2026) is “an agent that can take action across your apps and files, stay with a project for hours if needed, and turn a goal into finished work.” You can review progress and approve important actions.
  • Claude merged chat and Cowork on 16 September 2026, so you no longer choose a mode. Claude decides whether a request needs a quick answer or a multi-step task, which can keep running in the cloud with Manual or Auto permissions. It is rolling out to Pro and Max first.
  • Gemini Spark works in the background “24/7, even if your phone and laptop are turned off,” across Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube and Maps. It is limited to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers over 18 in select countries.

Integrations: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and other apps

Gemini is the natural fit for Google users. Google Workspace plans include Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Chat and Meet.

Claude works inside four Microsoft 365 apps: Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word is generally available on all paid plans, and Outlook is in beta. The Claude in Chrome extension (paid plans) can read pages, click and fill in forms using your existing logins.

ChatGPT replaced its App Directory with a Plugin Directory on 9 July 2026, and its Library now connects to Box, Dropbox and SharePoint. On 11 September OpenAI said it plans to retire custom GPTs and offer a migration path to plugins.

Privacy and data controls: which one uses your chats for training?

  • ChatGPT: on personal plans you can turn off “Improve the model for everyone,” after which new conversations are not used for training. Temporary Chats are not used for training but may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. OpenAI does not train on Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace content.
  • Claude: Free, Pro and Max users choose whether chats are used for model training. If you allow it, Anthropic keeps de-identified data for up to five years; if you do not, the standard 30-day retention applies after deletion. Incognito chats are never used for training. Anthropic says this consumer policy does not apply to Team, Enterprise or API use.
  • Gemini: Keep Activity is on by default, with an 18-month auto-delete period. Google says a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, and reviewed chats can be kept for up to three years. With Keep Activity off, or in Temporary chats, conversations are kept for 72 hours and not used for training.

Gemini’s defaults allow human review, so check its settings before sharing sensitive material.
