Deep Nostalgia is MyHeritage’s AI feature that animates the faces in old still photos, so a great-grandparent can blink, smile and turn their head. As of September 2026 MyHeritage still offers it on its website and mobile app, alongside the newer LiveMemory, which animates whole scenes. You can try it free, but unlimited use requires a Complete, Photo or Omni plan.

      What is Deep Nostalgia?

Deep Nostalgia is a photo animation tool from MyHeritage, the genealogy company founded in 2003 by Gilad Japhet and based in Or Yehuda, Israel. The private equity firm Francisco Partners acquired MyHeritage in 2021 and still lists it as a current investment, with Japhet remaining CEO. Deep Nostalgia launched at RootsTech Connect in February 2021. By 5 March 2021, MyHeritage reported that more than 10 million faces had been animated and that its app had become the most downloaded free app in the US.

The animation technology is licensed from D-ID, a company that specializes in video reenactment using deep learning. According to MyHeritage’s help center, the tool detects the faces in a photo, picks a pre-recorded gesture sequence (a “driver”) and applies it to each face. The result is a short video in which the person moves, blinks and smiles. D-ID now mainly sells AI avatars and video generation, and its website still lists MyHeritage as a customer.

      Is Deep Nostalgia still available?

Yes. In September 2026 Deep Nostalgia still appears in the Photos menu on myheritage.com and in MyHeritage’s photo-features guide (updated 4 January 2026). It is also listed on the MyHeritage Android app page (updated 19 August 2026) and in the help center’s plan descriptions. At least one 2026 third-party article claims it was “quietly sunset”, but MyHeritage’s own pages contradict that.

What MyHeritage has retired are two related features. The talking-photo tool DeepStory “has been discontinued”, and AI Time Machine, which generated AI images of a person in different historical periods, “was sunset and is no longer available”. In both cases the help center now suggests LiveMemory instead.

Key features of Deep Nostalgia and MyHeritage’s AI photo tools

      Face animation with drivers

Upload a photo on the Deep Nostalgia page, in “My photos” or in the MyHeritage app. Once faces are detected, the tool picks a driver automatically and renders the animation in about 10 to 20 seconds, depending on the driver’s length. If you don’t like the result, MyHeritage’s guide says you can choose from nine other animations. You can download videos as MP4 files or share them to social networks.

      • Photos are enhanced automatically before they are animated, for clearer results
      • You can animate every detected face in a group photo, but only one at a time
      • Animations carry small icons that mark them as simulated content, as part of what MyHeritage calls its commitment to historical authenticity

      LiveMemory: whole-photo video clips

LiveMemory launched in November 2024 and produces a roughly 5-second clip. It animates the whole scene rather than a single face. MyHeritage describes it as moving past Deep Nostalgia’s limit of one face and a few pre-set sequences. In December 2024 it gained custom gestures (hugging, kissing, dancing, laughing, singing) and effects such as zero gravity and underwater. July 2025 added 11 more effects and a model that stays closer to the original faces. It came to the website in June 2025, and MyHeritage said more than 500,000 videos had been made by then. Every clip carries an “AI” watermark.

      MyHeritage In Color

In Color adds color to black-and-white photos and restores the colors in faded photos that were originally taken in color. You can open it from myheritage.com/incolor or from any photo page.

      Photo Enhancer and Photo Repair

The Photo Enhancer upscales images and sharpens blurry faces. MyHeritage’s help article on it (last updated in 2021) says non-subscribers can enhance 10 photos, with a logo watermark. It also warns that results “may be inaccurate and, in rare cases, even distorted”. Photo Repair detects and fixes scratches, tears, holes and stains in old photos.

      Reimagine app and photo scanning

Reimagine is MyHeritage’s separate mobile app for scanning, repairing, colorizing and animating photos. It includes a multi-photo scanner that captures several prints on an album page at once. The Google Play listing was last updated in February 2026. The Photo and Omni plans include unlimited scanning in the mobile app.

PhotoDater, Photo Storyteller and Scribe AI

PhotoDater estimates when a photo from 1860 to 1990 was taken. MyHeritage describes it as free and says about 60% of its estimates fall within five years of the actual date. Photo Storyteller lets you record up to an hour of audio narration about a photo in the app. Scribe AI, presented at RootsTech 2026, transcribes and translates handwriting and interprets photos, letters and records.

      Benefits of Deep Nostalgia

      • Low effort: one upload, automatic face detection and a finished clip in seconds.
      • One place for the whole workflow: scan, repair, enhance, colorize and animate without switching apps.
      • Clear labeling: authenticity icons and LiveMemory’s “AI” watermark mark the output as simulated.
      • Works where your photos already are: you can animate straight from the “My photos” section of your MyHeritage account or the app.

Deep Nostalgia use cases by role

      • Family historians: bring ancestor portraits found in records or family albums to life and share them with relatives.
      • Families planning memorials or reunions: make short clips of grandparents for slideshows, keeping in mind that some viewers may find them emotional.
      • Teachers and heritage educators: use labeled animations of historical portraits to spark interest in a lesson.
      • Content creators: make heritage-themed social clips, following MyHeritage’s rules on consent and watermarks.

How much does Deep Nostalgia cost?

Deep Nostalgia has no separate price. It comes with MyHeritage subscriptions. The table below uses MyHeritage’s help center and blog as of September 2026. MyHeritage’s help center does not list prices, and we could not confirm current Complete or Omni prices from a MyHeritage source, so check the pricing page for the price in your country before you buy.

      Deep Nostalgia pros and cons

      Pros

      • Very simple: faces are detected automatically, with ten animation choices
      • Free to try without paying
      • Comes with repair, enhancement, colorization and scanning
      • Output is labeled as AI-generated
      • MyHeritage says its photo features do not retain biometric data

      Cons

      • Animates only faces, one at a time, from a fixed set of gestures
      • No published free limit, and free clips are watermarked
      • Prices for Complete and Omni are hard to confirm outside the checkout flow
      • LiveMemory is capped at 20 or 30 videos a year even on paid plans
      • Results can look uncanny, and enhancement can distort faces

      Privacy and ethics

MyHeritage’s privacy policy (updated 1 June 2026) says its AI photo features process “Image Data” only to provide the service and “do not collect or retain any biometric information or biometric identifiers from your photos.” LiveMemory clips are generated using third-party AI from Nanoble Pte., OpenAI and/or Google. MyHeritage says it will not sell or license your photos or use them to train its internal models. Deleting your account irreversibly removes your account, family sites, family trees and the personal data you entered.

Animating people who have died is a personal choice. D-ID co-founder Gil Perry told TechNewsWorld that both companies “care about the sensitivity of animating people who are no longer with us”. For LiveMemory, MyHeritage’s rules forbid uploading photos of living people without their permission or photos depicting hate or violence, ask users not to share results that may humiliate or offend anyone, and say the AI symbol must stay on the video. Some relatives may find the clips moving and others unsettling, so it is worth asking before you share.

      How to use Deep Nostalgia

      1. Go to myheritage.com/deep-nostalgia or open the MyHeritage app and sign up for a free account.
      2. Upload a scanned photo. Clear, front-facing faces work best, and the photo is enhanced automatically.
      3. Wait 10 to 20 seconds while the first face is animated with an automatically chosen driver.
      4. Try the other animation options if the motion looks unnatural, and choose other faces in the photo one at a time.
      5. Download the MP4 or share it. Subscribers get videos without the MyHeritage logo.
      6. For a whole-scene clip, open LiveMemory in the app or on the website and pick an automatic animation, gesture or effect.

      Deep Nostalgia alternatives

      • Remini: pick it for restoring and sharpening old or blurry photos on your phone. It is made by Bending Spoons and sold by weekly or yearly subscription.
      • Adobe Photoshop: pick it if you already use Photoshop. Its Neural Filters include Colorize and a beta Photo Restoration filter, and you keep full manual control.
      • Hotpot: pick it for quick browser-based scratch removal, color sharpening and face enhancement. Free results carry a non-commercial license, and paid credits unlock commercial use.
      • Runway: pick it if you want creative AI video with models such as Gen-4.5 rather than one-click animation. The free plan has 125 one-time credits, and Standard costs $15 per month or $12 per month billed annually.

      Frequently asked questions

Is Deep Nostalgia still available in 2026?

Yes. As of September 2026, MyHeritage still lists Deep Nostalgia in its website menu, its January 2026 photo-features guide and its Android app listing. Some third-party articles say it has been retired. MyHeritage’s help center says DeepStory and AI Time Machine were discontinued, but it says nothing like that about Deep Nostalgia. LiveMemory sits alongside it as the newer, whole-scene option.

      Is Deep Nostalgia free?

Partly. MyHeritage says users can create several animations for free, but it does not publish an exact number. Free videos carry a MyHeritage logo watermark. To animate an unlimited number of photos without the logo, you need a Complete, Photo or Omni plan. Its help center lists all three as including unlimited Deep Nostalgia.

What is the difference between Deep Nostalgia and LiveMemory?

Deep Nostalgia animates one face at a time using a set of pre-recorded gesture sequences, called drivers. LiveMemory, launched in November 2024, animates the whole photo into a short video clip. It uses third-party generative AI and adds custom gestures and effects. The Photo plan includes 20 LiveMemory videos a year and Omni includes 30. Deep Nostalgia is unlimited on those plans.

      Who made Deep Nostalgia?

MyHeritage, the genealogy company founded in 2003 by Gilad Japhet, launched Deep Nostalgia in February 2021. The animation technology is licensed from D-ID, an Israeli company that specializes in video reenactment using deep learning. D-ID now mainly sells AI avatar and video tools, and its website still names MyHeritage as a customer.

Does MyHeritage keep my photos or use them to train AI?

MyHeritage’s June 2026 privacy policy says its AI photo features do not collect or retain biometric information or identifiers from your photos. For LiveMemory, MyHeritage says it will not license or sell your photos to third parties or use them to train its internal AI models. The processing itself is done by Nanoble, OpenAI and/or Google. If you delete your account, your data is removed permanently.

Can Deep Nostalgia make photos talk?

No. Deep Nostalgia adds movement only: blinking, smiling and head turns. MyHeritage’s separate talking-photo feature, DeepStory, has been discontinued, and the company’s help center now points users to LiveMemory. Existing DeepStories can still be downloaded in the mobile app.

      Verdict

Deep Nostalgia is still the simplest way to see an ancestor’s face move, and in September 2026 it remains part of MyHeritage rather than being replaced. Use the free animations to judge the results. If you also want repair, colorization and whole-scene LiveMemory clips, the Photo plan is the most focused option, while Complete or Omni make more sense if you also research your family tree. Share animations of relatives thoughtfully.
